David Stokes mentioned yesterday that the mid-April Orlando Florida “Collaborate 11″ conference has many MySQL-related sessions.
I (Peter Gulutzan) emphasize these session titles, presenters, and what they represent:
MySQL 5.5 Replication by Lars Thalmann (MySQL replication team)
InnoDB: Performance and Scalability Features by Inaam Rana (MySQL InnoDB team)
MySQL Backup and Security - Best Practices by Lenz Grimmer (MySQL community team)
InnoDB: Status, Architecture and Latest Enhancements by Calvin Sun (MySQL InnoDB team)
Sharding Techniques for MySQL by Mats Kindahl (MySQL replication team)
When Things Go Wrong: How to Find SQL Error by Sveta Smirnova (MySQL support team)
MySQL, Oracle and ANSI Syntax by Peter Gulutzan (MySQL server team)
Introduction to MySQL External Authentication by Georgi Kodinov (MySQL server team)
Introduction to Using MySQL in Cloud Computing by Chuck Bell (MySQL replication team)
The words “MySQL … team” are important — these are the people who do the DBMS.
This is the Abstract and Outline for the session that I’ll be in:
431: MySQL, Oracle, and ANSI Syntax
Wednesday, April 13 at 1:00pm - 2:00pm
Session Title: MySQL, Oracle, and ANSI Syntax
Session Abstract: As MySQL’s SQL syntax becomes more standard, it becomes easier for Oracle-11g folk to understand. This started before the takeover as MySQL took to using standard syntax, which Oracle influences. Now that we’re part of Oracle, the process is accelerating.
Session Outline: Start with: The ANSI (de jure) and Oracle (de facto) standards. Go into detail with: Pre-takeover changes: Oracle’s time/date formats, pseudo-DUAL, “set sql_mode=oracle”, InnoDB’s MVCC, SUBSTR, strict mode, CREATE USER, precision math. Conclude with: post-takeover changes: our answer to Oracle Wait Interface, integration with Oracle applications like Audit Vault, adherence to Oracle security policies for applications. Throughout, emphasize: What’s more like Oracle now,
and What the direction is for new MySQL features.
Please come.
